The General Perceptions of Career Choice of Nursing and Related Factors among Secondary School Students

Abstract
Background and Aims:
Positive perceptions towards the nursing profession among high school students contribute to an increase in the attractiveness of the nursing profession. The purpose of this study was to explore the perceptions and factors influencing high school students toward choosing the nursing profession.
Methods:
This is a descriptive cross-sectional study conducted in secondary schools in Najran city, Saudi Arabia with 340 students participating in the study.
Results:
Overall, 340 students participated in the research; 117 (34.4%) of the respondents chose nursing as a career, 195 (57.4%) were females, and 145 (42.6%) were males. Some factors influence the choice of university specialist: 188 (55.92%) were influenced by self-future ambition. The cohort was less influenced by parents 33 (9.7%) and school lessons 2 (0.6%). In general, the results showed positive perceptions of nursing. Here, 205 subjects (60.3%) consider nursing as a profession that helps others. Also, 261 (76.8%) think that nursing is an attractive job and has good discipline. In addition, 229 (67.4%) believe that nursing is a profession of good income, while 271 (79.7%) think that nurses are respected and appreciated by society.
Conclusions:
The perceptions toward the nursing profession were positive and are influenced by many factors.
